Dramatic end to the Route du Rhum relegates Alex Thomson to third place despite crossing the line first.

24-hour penalty imposed after HUGO BOSS runs aground 70 miles before the finishing line in Guadeloupe

Alex Thomson has officially finished the Route du Rhum in third place behind winner Paul Meilhatand runner-up Yann Eliès in the IMOCA class. While crossing the line first on Friday, Thomson was handed a 24-hour penalty by the race jury for using his engine to get off rocks after running his HUGO BOSS yacht aground while over-sleeping just 70 miles short of the finishing line. Fortunately, skipper Alex Thomson remained uninjured and HUGO BOSS could make it to the finish under its own power.
