Bremen, 10 March 2015
After kicking off on 31 December 2014, the 2014/2015 Barcelona World Race is now well underway. The race will cover approximately 26,000 nautical miles en route and will take around three months to complete. This means that reliability and endurance are two crucial attributes both man and equipment must deliver in this extreme competition. Gleistein Ropes is the Official Rope Supplier to the Neutrogena Sailing Team. With around 3,000 metres of running rigging supplied, Gleistein has equipped the Neutrogena entry with the highest quality, durable lines with Dyneema®.
The sponsorship agreement between the Neutrogena Sailing Team and Gleistein Ropes, which was originally announced in 2014, brings together leaders in their respective fields. Rigging with the highest performance levels and extreme reliability was required to meet the extreme demands of the Barcelona World Race – in which the yacht and crew are exposed to the harshest of conditions including gale force winds and giant waves in the Southern Ocean. Gleistein Ropes has equipped Neutrogena with lines made with Dyneema®, the world’s strongest fiber™, ensuring the highly renowned and experienced Skippers, Guillermo Altadill and José Muñoz, will successfully deal with the extreme challenges they will face with confidence. The Neutrogena Sailing Team has been making excellent progress throughout the race, holding a solid second position for much of the race so far.
Gleistein has exclusively used Dyneema® fibres for its ropes for many years. Boasting greater strength, reliability and longer life than fibres from other HMPE (high modulus polyethylene) providers, Dyneema® fibres deliver substantial advantages for all-round performance and perfectly complement Gleistein’s advanced manufacturing processes and state-of-the-art finishing technologies. “We are committed to providing the best rope solutions available and thereby only work with Dyneema® fibres to manufacture our high quality HMPE ropes. Among the Gleistein Ropes premium lines on board of Neutrogena are TaperTwin halyards and RunnerTwin sheets both made with the latest Dyneema® fibre innovation, SK99. Dyneema® SK99 offers the highest tenacity of any lightweight polymer fibre, and increased modulus performance. Never before has so much performance been available in such a compact, lightweight and easy to handle form,” says Dr. Heide Giese-Bothe, Market Manager at Gleistein Ropes. Linda Rutten, Marketing Manager at DSM Dyneema adds: “Our dedication to quality is extreme – so it is more than fitting that Neutrogena is equipped with lines made of Dyneema® throughout one of the world’s most extreme offshore yachting races.”
Part of the IMOCA Ocean Masters World Championships, the Barcelona World Race is a genuine benchmark for extreme ocean sailing. It is the only double handed, unassisted race around the world. The Barcelona to Barcelona course runs via the Cape of Good Hope off the South African coast, Cape Leeuwin south of Australia and the infamous Cape Horn at the most southern tip of South America.
Gleistein has been manufacturing ropes since 1824 and is the oldest family industrial company in Bremen (Germany). Together with its Trencin (Slovakia) plant the company boasts two of the most modern rope manufacturing facilities in the world with a total production area of more than 17,000m². Modern chemical fibres, sophisticated designs and future-oriented rope finishing equipment and procedures offer a definite quality “plus” that directly benefits the consumer. Gleistein offers a complete service, provides its customers with industry-leading know-how and assists in selecting the perfect rope – whatever the need. Ready-to-use finishing of products, execution of contracted tests and the development of tailor-made solutions round out the comprehensive range of services.
