As Official Rope Supplier of the PUMA Team at the recent Volvo Ocean Race, Gleistein Ropes had great reason to celebrate when “il mostro” finished in second place overall. The excellent result capped off an arduous nine-month journey covering more than 37,000 nautical miles. Not a single rope breakage was recorded throughout the entire race – a fact showcasing the superiority of the supplier's quality product.
The selection of Gleistein Ropes as Official Rope Supplier paid immediate dividends for the PUMA Team at its inaugural Volvo Ocean Race. From 3mm lashing cords to 14mm ropes for the main halyard, every item could notch up a 100% reliability record in what is regarded as the world's toughest regatta. Heat set ropes were used to contend with the extreme demands and all riggings were colour-coded for instant recognition even under the most intense conditions. PBO was utilised as the outer cover material on all ropes due to its high heat resistance. The PUMA crew cited the optimised TaperTwin, MegaTwin Dyneema HS, DynaOne and DynaOne HS as being among their favourite ropes.
Thomas Schlaetzer, Managing Director at Gleistein Ropes, was delighted with the PUMA Team partnership: "We could hardly have hoped for more. With its unique, eye-catching bodywork and fantastic second place overall, 'il mostro' drew the crowd's undivided attention. Picking up the Fairness and Media Awards were further highlights. Together, this naturally also gave our ropes an incredible amount of exposure." Regarding the race as a real-life test laboratory for the 15,000 metres of rope used on board, Schlaetzer went on to say that: “Our products must perform flawlessly under the harshest of conditions. And with no rope breakages throughout the whole race we can really be proud of playing our part in the PUMA Team's success. But we're not going to rest on our laurels. What we have learned over the last nine months will be used by Gleistein Ropes to continue in the development of new products that persist to push the boundaries of what is possible.”
Gleistein Ropes is no stranger to partnerships on the high seas. They were aboard the “illbruck” when it recorded its victory at the 2001/2002 predecessor event of the Volvo Ocean Race. Furthermore, the Bremen-based technology leader is also involved in the America's Cup with BMW ORACLE Racing and the record-breaking solo round-the-world vessel, Trimaran IDEC.
Gleistein has been manufacturing ropes since 1824 and is the oldest family industrial company in Bremen. The company has direct access on the Weser river and in Trencin (Slovakia) to two of the most modern production plants in the world for manufacturing ropes with a total of more than 17,000 m² of production area. Modern chemical fibres, sophisticated designs and future-oriented rope finishing installations offer a certain “plus” in terms of quality and benefit to the consumer. Gleistein provides its customers a complete service, assists them with know how and helps in selecting the correct rope. Ready-to-use presentation of the products, performance of contractual tests or development of special solutions round off the range of services of the ropemakers from the coast.
